I'm hoping to get the plywood core for my workbench project starting to glue up this weekend. It's the same type of construction as the one Sam Blasco did on this thread where he mentions making some Pookey.
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=22081&highlight=pookey

Now where's a girl going to find a good Pookey recipe with company coming?:D

Anyway, I initially though he was using the same sawdust for epoxy filler for the glue-up but recently re-read it and notice Sam mentions using it for edge grain filler after the benchtop was together. So can I use the same type of Pookey for the glue-up as well? Or do I need to bite the bullet and order one of the West fillers? http://www.westsystem.com/frames/tier2/productinfo/productguide.htm

This is my first foray into using real epoxy, and not the 5-minute junk from the Borgs. I already bought the epoxy, hardener, metering pump, etc., but didn't think to get any of the filler as I thought the sawdust would work. I saved a good size ziplock bag of very fine Baltic Birch ply dust from the bottom of my TS cabinet just before getting the cyclone hookup to the TS done. Can I use that?

So, if company was coming and you had to whip up a quick batch of Pookey, what would be in your's? Any regional specialties like Texas Honey Mesquite Smoked Pookey, Chicago Deep Dish Pookey, or Philadelphia Cream Pookey?:D Cant seem to get anywhere locating a good Pookey recipe using Google.

I'll bet if you did a search on the following site, you'd find what you're looking for: http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi

For boat building, I use colloidal silica if I want a relatively clear filler or for bonding applications. If I want filler that more closely matches the color of wood, I will add pine or maple wood flour to the colloidal silica. Sanding dust works too. The epoxy and fillers I use come from Raka.com. Colloidal silica is good to have around if you want to use epoxy for bonding applications. I use a mixture that has the color and consistency of Vaseline if I don't want the epoxy to run. I'll brush on some unthickened epoxy in the joint first if the wood is open grained. I do this to prevent a starved joint.

I use store bought "Pookey". System Three T-88, structural epoxy. It already has the thixotopic(sp.) agent in it. It mixes 50/50 and is very easy to use.

Any good wood flour( dust in the palm sander bag) should do the trick though.

If I had company coming and needed a quick recipe for "pookey" I would go to this site http://bateau2.com/content/view/99/28/. Once there, you can go back to see other epoxy recipes.

Well I spent quite a bit of time last night and this morning reading posts on the kayak forum and also the info on the bateau site (both good links BTW). I think I got more unsure though. Depending on what I read, the sawdust would be OK, or I'd regret it. Anyway, I got nervous about using it so placed an order for some of the West stuff. So I decided to order Carry-Out for the main course. I'll save the sawdust for filler after it's glued up. Thanks everyone for sharing your best Pookey recipes. I'll have to invite y'all to my next Tupperware party.:D

If you follow the dog around the yard long enough, you may be rewarded with pookey.:D
