I am wanting to replace a old fiberglass garage door{single car} on my soon to be shop.

has anyone replaced one with a swing out barn type or something smiler?
I
want to insulate the old door area and have a big enough opening to get tools etc in and out .

the building looks like a old gambreal roof barn. with a loft aka lumber storage.

Ill try to get some pics this weekend.

thanks fot the help....

I replaced my overhead garage door with double insulated French doors Both open and have embedded blinds. I think there may be 8' versions also. I framed in the old door opening insulated and drywalled inside. It was pretty simple since there was already a header and framing available from the old door. The temperature is very stable now compared to before and the doors let in a lot of light. 6' wide is plenty to move anything in or out. No more wind and mice coming in either.

I'm working on the same project now. Got tired of the old door taking up so much overhead storage space. I'm making carriage doors out of 8/4 fir. They're obscenely expensive if you have someone else make them. Rightly so--they take a lot of work to build.

The only catch is that I need to span 12' where the old overhead door was. I'm making 4 3' doors that will meet in the middle, bi-fold style. 6 glass panes per door. I'll need to rig some sort of overhead roller system to support the middle panels so they don't sag over time. I'm planning to use lots of beefy hinges. Will post pictures when done. Don't ask when that might be...

I heartily recommend out-swing doors. (as long as they have appropriate non-removable hing pins for security) I have to sets of them on my shop (basic 6' insulated double out-swing metal doors; mine with windows in them). They are great for access, energy efficient and when open take up zero shop space.
