I have gathered everything I need to give the DNA method a shot but I have one question; how thick should I leave the rough turned bowls? For example, if I want a finished bowl 1/4 of an inch thick, how thick do I turn it initially? What if I want something thicker, like a full inch?

Jason, some wood warps more than others when it drys. It all depends upon the characteristics of the wood. What type of wood are you working with?

I have read the rule of thumb is 10% of the width. On mine if the bowls are 10" and under I leave them 3/4" thick. Anything over that I leave at least 1". I have had good luck using those figures. I had a e-mail from Mike Mahoney one time that said don't leave the lips of the bowl edge square. He said to round them off and that helps keep them from cracking. Seems to work pretty well for me so far. Just my $1.298.

Hi Jason,

You should just Google Dave Smith's site and read much more than you ever thought was available about soaking and drying with Denatured Alcohol.
