I am about to start a new segmented piece, and have a ratio question. When I posted my last vase, http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=60154 . I got a couple of really good suggestions about not making the bottom and top the same diameter. I asked about a rule of thumb for the ratio, but didn't get any response. I have several new pieces on the drawing board, but before I start cutting expensive wood, I'll ask again if anyone has a general rule for the bottom to top size relationship? Are there any good books or other resources regarding form? Thanks for the help.

Brian, I don't know of any tried and true ratios to abide by. In general, I think it's just a good practice to create one larger that the other. Perhaps the best ratio of all is the "golden ratio". That could certainly be applied (1 to 1.618). Good luck with your new projects.

Would this be that 'golden ratio' John Hart talked about one time?

Wow. Talk about timing Malcolm.
