Please Do Not Post Responses In This Thread
Only Personal, Lathe Information & Picture Entries

When you make this post it will already state who you are in the post heading, so you will not need to add that. The picture must be of you standing by your lathe. Add the picture by using the "Manage Attachments" feature. If you own multiple lathes, multiple pictures are permissible. Copy the questions below into your post and then answer under each one. Answer the following questions to the best of your ability about yourself and your lathe. Try to remember to remove the bold lettering from your answer but not the question. A separate thread will be available for responses to these posts.

What is your lathe's capacity/Specification?

Hello all! Joined SMC when good friend Marvin told me about it and have enjoyed it a lot, maybe for about the past year or so. I like the friendliness and the variety of posts, everyone is mostly positive and informative, makes for a very nice visit. I have two lathes, one was my Dad's, a little Wood Wizard made in about I'd guess 1938. My husband built a terrific, sturdy bench for it, mounted the motor, and it runs fine. About a 7" throw and 32" length bed. Then we bought a VB36 about 5 years ago, beautiful machine and will turn anything. So I use both pretty much all the time. Right now my piano student has an Ash bowl on the little lathe he's turning and I have a big Cherry blank on the big lathe. It's lots of fun! I think the thread is fine and a nice idea just to get to know people better or put a face with a name. Thanks! Jude

Browsing for woodturning info at first but got more interested in it when Andy Hoyt posted on WOW with a Christmas greeting from a whole slew of Creekers.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
All the friendly people and seeing the beautiful work they do.
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
My "main machine" is a 1954 Oliver 159A but I just bought a Delta Midi for doing small things.
What is your lathe's capacity?
Well, if I slid the headstock on the Oliver down to the end of the ways, built me a free standing tool rest, got me a good life insurance policy, and downed a couple moxies, I could probably turn out something 2 or 3 feet in diameter. But the actual capacity of the Oliver is 14" x 42", the Delta is 12"

And as you can see in the picture, there ain't nothing pretty about my lathes, my shop, or me.

Well I finally got a 'round 2it' so here's my contribution. I have discovered that I still possess the capability to blow a bowl all to ^&*(, haven't found all the parts yet. I was working with some green (fell out of a white oak in my front yard last Sunday) wood had it going decent just smoothing it out a bit and blooey parts went every where. Just to ease my frazzeled nerves I put a piece of cherry on and made a small box. Its not complete yet I have to make the lid probably out of dunnowood the cherry piece was to small. Nuff about that on with the show.

When did you join SMC?
I joined in March of 2005.

How did you first find out about this site?
I read about it in an email magazine. I think it was called the Woodworker's Ezine or something like that.

What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
I like SMC because whenever I have a question, no matter how stupid, or how many times it has been asked before, I can always get an answer, usually pretty quickly. I also love seeing what everyone else is working on.

What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
My lathe is an old Rockwell/Delta, I don't know the model or year. It used to belong to my wifes grandfather, when he moved into an apartment I got it and most of the other equipment from his shop. You can see the whole thing here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5tABY4q5gA), keep in mind, the video was shot over a year ago when we first moved in, the shop is a lot messier now!

What is your lathes capacity?
It has a 12" swing and I believe it is 36" long. It can be set up to turn outboard but I haven't tried that yet.

Good mix of skill levels, lots of opinions shared freely without flaming or whining. Almost like there should be a sign on the front page that opinions and thoughts are welcome, that "we play nice". :D
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
Jet 1236, purchased sort of used (returned for upgrade after 3 weeks of gentle use) in 2006
Carba-Tec mini (old black body model), in my possession since 1994, probably 10 or more years older than that
Shopsmith, 1992, but had a clone purchased in 1984 or so until 2005
What is your lathe's capacity?
Jet is 12 over bed
Carba-Tec is 10 over bed, but better with smaller
Shopsmith says it'll take up to 16", but I'll borrow my buddy's Jet or PM for stuff that size, thank you very much!Shopsmith was used for a lot of years for turning as well as everything else. Hasn't been turning much since the Jet came to live. Works pretty well with new bearings on the quill. Very, very little run out, but still doesn't have the heft and balance of even the 1236 Jet. Even using 80 pounds of sand it's not as good as the Jet.

Just ran across it when doing turning browsing and searching
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
Don't know yet, but it sure is fun to see other people's lathes.
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
It's a patternmaker's lathe made by Rollstone Machine Works, Fitchburg, MA, probably in the 1880s. They went out of business around 1890.
What is your lathe's capacity?
24" swing with about 6.5 feet between centers.

I am currently in the process of purchasing another lathe, an Oliver. It was designed for metal spinning, but it will be great for wood too. Hopefully I can post its picture in the near future.

I believe I was exploring the "other forum..." you know... over there, which led my to the Freedom Pens Project, which led me here.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
All the friendly, experienced people that have great advice for an inexperienced novice. Also, the fact that I can ask a question and have an answer within a half hour is pretty good!
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
It is a el-cheapo PSI Turncrafter Plus Variable Speed. (A couple years, a couple thousand dollars, and a couple more square feet later, she might become a PM 3520 or a JET 1642.)
What is your lathe's capacity?
Specifications:
• Motor: 1/4HP 750-3200 RPM
• Headstock: 3/4" x 16tpi w/ #1MT
• Construction: Cast Iron
• Wt: Portable at 43lbs
• Overall size: 25-1/2"L x 5"W x 12"H
• Swing over bed: 7-1/2 "
• 12-1/2" between centers
Many Extras! Purchase includes:
• 4-1/2" and 7" Toolrests
• 2" Faceplate
• #1MT Spur Center
• Live Tailstock Center
• Knockout Bar and Wrench

I just copied and pasted that. The swing is a little less if you want to position the toolrest underneath your work for roughing out a bowl blank, and (Warning- rant) the 7" toolrest broke. Yes... steel, cracked in half.

Here she is...

It looks like there is a great knowledge base here. I want to learn how to make stuff without getting hurt (again).

What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
Rockwell/delta model 46B (I think), approx 1947. I am told that I am the first person to use it in about 40 years. My grandfather bought it used in the 60's and dad tells me that he does not think grandpa ever used it. I was given the machine and all of the assorted accessories, chisels etc. Some of which I am still trying to identify.

What is your lathe's capacity?
Not sure, but it's probably bigger than I need!

IMO woodworkers who have an interest and knowledge of computers find this as a place where you can get a good woodworking fix without going to the shop. Like when you are at work or just have a sec. I have seen more talent here then in my years of reading magazines. I have also made some of the best friends ever!

Hi,

I joined SMC 12-09-06

My son, Glenn, introduced me to the site.

What I enjoy most is an extremely difficult question. I just seem to like the entire thing. It is fun to chat. It is great to get answers to questions and it is a pleasure to be able to provide information occasionally to people who ask questions.

My lathe is new to me---have not even stuck a piece of wood in it yet.
It is an old, in excellent condition, Delta 46-140.

Capacity 11" x 36"

I just took a two day course on woodturning and plan to sign up for the Palomar College woodturning class which starts in August. I understand that it is excellent. Until the two day class I had never used a woodlathe so I am really a newbe.

Personal: born 12-31-1925. I think I am the oldest SMC member---Now that is a horrible thought!!! Reside Oceanside, Calif.

Enjoy,

Jim

Hi there!

Here are some pics of myself in my toolshop doing some pens.

I have a Jet 1014 and a Jet 1442 that replaced my old Harbor Freight lathes. Now I have an old 12" lathe where I glue the rings of the segmented vessels. I also keep 2 Harbor Freight mini lathes, one with a copier and the other one as an spare....

126962
The pic in the middle is when I received my new Jet 1442 last February. Quite an event!

Second lathe I got back in April this year: It is a 1927 Oliver #66.

Six months ago.

How did you find out about this site?
Went on an Internet search trying to help my buddy resolve his Barracuda Chuck problems, and stumbled onto SMC.

What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
This is very much like my woodturners group, except on-line and I don't have to wait weeks for the next meeting. So I come here for the same reasons: Looking for inspiration, information, and resources. Sometimes I just need to "knock ideas around" as I ponder my next project or I'm facing a decision, and the feedback is usually immediate.

What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
Late model Jet 1442, but I sometimes use my neighbor's Jet 1642. I like the pivoting headstock on the 1442, but the larger lathe has a slower lower end, so it's useful when I turn huge, irregular.

What is your lathe's capacity?
14" in the standard mode, but if I pivot the head I could probably turn a 36" platter. Spindle capacity is 42".

When did you join SMC?
According to this webbsite I joined in June of 2004, though I know that for quite a long time all I did was to lurk as my turning skills were ... well lets just say that I had none.
How did you find out about this site?
Probably found the site by googling something to do with turning.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
I think that without finding this site it would have taken me considerably longer to learn some of the asthetics of turning, with the help of others I've learned what is right or wrong about a piece, and what perhaps I should do differently to improve my work, everyone here seems to show a generous interest in helping others.
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
I turn on a General 260-20vs I purchased the lathe used back in 2006 ( at the time I was told it was 2 yrs old so that would make it a 2004 model I believe ) but really did not start to use it till sometime in 2007 as I didn't have it set up till then
What is your lathe's capacity?
My lathe has an inboard capacity of 20" but in 2010 I purchased the outboard attachment which gives me a capacity of 28" but I have yet to use this feature.

I was new to woodturning and was surfing the net.
What do you enjoy the most about SMC?
Lots of good tips from good people.
What is the make, model and year of your lathe?
I have four lathes. I bought my first lathe on a whim on Ebay because it brought back memories of my junior high shop class. Its a 1980 Powermatic 90 with 12" of swing. I bought my second lathe because it was a good deal and I enjoyed restoring my first one so much I thought I'd do it again. My second lathe is a 1981 Powermatic 90 that I lifted 3" to give it 18" of swing. I originally bought my third lathe for parts but when I learned it was #68 ever built I decided to restore it. Its the 1955 Powermatic 90 shown above and has an 18" swing. My wife's lathe is a Jet mini with 10" of swing. Sometime in the future I would like to sell lathe #2 and get a mustard monster.
