I bought a block plane today for $5 at a flea market. There are no markings or numbers on it except "Union Mfg. Co. New Britain Ct USA" stamped on the iron. it is virtually identical to my Stanley 9 1/2 except the lever cap is nickel plated and locks with a knuckle-joint and the nut that fastens the adjustable throat is black cast iron instead of brass. Is it from a cheaper line of planes made by Stanley? Let me know what I have. The picture on the left shows mu 9 1/2 on top and the new one below. Thanks, Tom

Looks like a Sargent or Craftsman knuckle joint plane with the wrong blade and someone has put the adjusting wheel from a lever cap on as a front knob. The front knob is incorrect, just search sargent block plane on ebay and you will see how it should look.
