I have a job making a box with 5/8" thick walls. Material doesn't matter too much although my preference is MDF. Is there a sheet material commercially available that is 5/8" thick so that I don't have to run it through a planer? Thanks, Tom

Afternoon Tom...

Brian has you covered with Birch, just thought I would mention that running any quantity of MDF to thickness it in your planer can be somewhat "taxing" on planer blade sharpness if you're considering it. A small quantity probably won't be a major factor though.

I thinking that if you can find a 5/8" ply material that the 5/8" rating will be nominal sizing and that the actual thickness will be a little thinner than 5/8".

You should be able to source 5/8" sheet material from a sheet goods supplier. If you don't know who that is in your area, talk to any of your local cabinet shops.

Thanks, Brian, John and Dave. The baltic birch should work. My Makita planer is so old the rubber rollers have fallen apart and need replacing, so I would be farming out the planing job anyway. I realize the baltic birch won't be full thickness, but I think it will be acceptable (and closer than 3/4").

Tom,Today I saw a sign for 5/8" MDF at Home Depot. I was picking up a sheet of 1/2" and was surprised to see the 5/8" in between the 1/2" stack and 3/4" stack. Price must have been about $20 per 49" x 97" sheet.

5/8" MDF here at HD sells for 18.00 a sheet. 3/4" is 20.00. 1/2" is 15 or 16.00. I used 5/8" on for the torsion boxes I just completed. Worked very well. Jim.

Jim is right MDF comes in all thicknesses. I've got some that I'm going to use for a project that is 1 3/8" thick.
