View Full Version : Remember That Big Ash Burl????

Well, I stayed up a little late tonight to finish the first piece that I started from that burl.
If I hadn't cut the burl up myself, I wouldn't believe that this piece was ash... The grain is so tight, there are almost no pores in the wood, and the ones I see are tiny.
Anyway, this one is 9 inches in diameter by 5 1/2 inches high. The hole is 1 1/2 inches and the foot is 3 inches.
The finish is sanded to 600 with mineral oil with burnished in bee's wax at the end.
As always, all comments, critiques welcome :)

holy cow that grain is stunning! Your finish really brings it out too. I think I might like the form better upside down, but that's personal preference. Great job.

That figure is so crazy I'd say it was a segmented if I didn't see the inclusion go right through the middle of it. Great stuff George.

Thank you EVERYONE!!! :D
Steve,
I am selling off several pieces to a good friend tomorrow...
I will sell more at the Totally Turning Symposium in Albany this October, but I HAVE saved a number of pieces for my own use... A couple are pretty big - I REALLY wish I had some kind of bowl saver! :(
I may not get back to it for a while, it just depends on what I stumble on next... I have a bunch of apple BURL  I am going to turn some of soon.

Thank you some more to the new comments...
I have to say, it really would have been difficult to get the orientation wrong on this wood. I have never had anything quite like it.
