Well.....another weekend has come and gone.....too short of course and soon it will be back to the "grindstone".

I got some shop time in this weekend and I was able to get my homemade blast gates made in preparation for when I upgrade my DC to a cyclone with ducted collection. I worked the whole weekend on finally figuring out the compound angles on the 4 leg stool that I have been trying to make !!!! Yea!!!!!! I now have to make 4 more to have the order complete. Now LOML says she wants me to make some for family and friends! Can anybody say "PINE" instead of Red Oak? :)

LOML told me this afternoon (Sunday) that I had to make a Wood duck house for the 4-H group that had to be done for Mondays meeting.!!! Sheesh!!!! I just got that done and they are going to donate it to a local state park.....

Well....that's it for my weekend....Now what about yours?

Best of Weeks,

Not much shop time this weekend. I did manage to finish routing the stiles and rails for some raised panels that will eventually be assembeled into a cedar lined chest for my daughter's 16th. Other than that, I don't know where the time went. Oh yeah, tried to get my taxes completed.

Started a new project this weekend. I'm making two Mission Style end tables with rift cut white oak. Saturday morning I went to the local hardwood merchant and bought the lumber. Saturday afternoon I spent planing and I also glued up one top.
Sunday I glued up one shelf, and cut and marked the legs for mortises.
Moving kinda slow these days.
Also I spent quite a bit of time reseting the knives on my Delta 6" jointer. Its gota go. Also spent some time tuning the Jet band saw.

Others?

I worked on my shop cabinet. I prefinished 3 pieces of 1" X 6' beadboard car siding for one side of the cabinet on Friday. Bobby and I assembled the side panel with cleats [glued]. The tongue and groove boards are not glued, just the cleats.

All assembly was with 1 1/4 inch brads, air driven. We measured very carefully and squared up the panel using my sawboard guide.

The finish is shellac , provincial pine stain, & dark Fiddes wax. The shelves are 3/4" Meranti (spelling) Plywood with a 1/2" thick edge banding of antique pine. (Reclaimed lumber). The edge banding is glued and brad nailed. The holes filled with Elmer’s somthin or other.

Bobby & I cut all the shelves, the boards and cleats for the other side and the back (32" x 66' X 1/2" plywood). I finished the shelves today and will finish the other parts this week.

My electrician came in Saturday and wired my first 220V circuit.(in the shop) The plumber installed a new Faucet in the Kitchen, another in the bath. (bills, bills, bills)

Next Saturday, the carcass will be assembled. We will then make face frames, doors and a top. That's the plan..........

I finally found time to finish the hall table that got interupted by the kitchen remodel. As you can see it was built to fit this space at the end of an upstairs hall.
I've had the top glued and the legs cut for 6 months but the draw wasn't cut. Over the weekend I cut the dovetails, assembled and finished. The finish is a homebrew oil with some black walnuts (got a tree in the front yard) stewed in it. It will only see wax from now on.

Got accomplished what I had set out to do, but doesn't look anywhere near as rewarding as what the rest of the guys report, thus far. We have a whole boat-load of realtors (from the home office) coming this morning, so I spent the bulk of my weekend cleaning and hobbling around. Saturday was cleanup day for the shop. Man, it's amazing how much crapola a guy can accumulate in a real short period of time! Yesterday, it was on to my computer room/office. I just don't get why I had to go through all that. Sheeeesh, I just cleaned the office in December. Oh yeah, maybe because it was Dec. of 2001. LOML is happy. And, if the place doesn't sell, I should be all set until, at least, Christmas!:D Also managed a quick trip into the city on Sun. to pick up some el cheapo lumber from one of the big boxes. You shoulda' seen some of the 1x6 "standard". Whew. Great if you were building a round observatory or something! Have a SUPER week, everyone!

I spent most of Saturday morning picking up my new Jet JWL-1642EVS Lathe from Woodworker's Haven in Southampton PA.

The lathe comes in ONE BIG BOX! Thankfully, that big box can be broken down in to (3) somewhat smaller boxes. But they still all weighed a good deal.

Somehow, I managed to get it all home safely. I then assembled it all by myself. While it wasn't that difficult, next time I purchase such a large heavy machine, I'm getting some help! I haven't felt this sore since I used to lift weights at Gold's gym.

The lathe went together flawlessly. Fit and finish were excellent. I still need to raine it up a bit to make it more comfortable for me to turn at.

I also need to buy a 1 1/4"-8 TPI adapter for my Talon Chuck so that I can actually TURN something on this new lathe! The store I bought it from was OUT of stock on this item (even though I asked them to save me one about a week ago). They should have some in stock today. And hopefully tonight I can test this baby out.

See ya,
Dominic

Didn't your mother ever tell you to be careful about how you lift or pull things???

Sat am I borrowed my B-I-L's trailer to get some plywood from the local big box. Dragging the trailer through a snow back started the back a-talkin' to me. (Did you know there's something called a "snow shovel" that moves snow and makes it easier to move things around in the winter?)

After picking up the plywood, I headed over to the Pratt & Whitney surplus store. i'd bought a 4'x8' dolly with locking casters for $5 and needed to get it out of there. Loading that onto the trailer, even with the bed tilted and a come-a-long, got the back screamin' at me. Later, went back to pickup a 5'(h)x28"(d)x30"(w) Vidmar-style cabinet for tooling and that sealed the conversation.

I did accomplish some in the rigging dept, but have a ways to go before we start rolling machinery around the house.

The great news (for me) is that LOML told some friends who were over to see the addition, that the kitchen cabinet job is on the list for "somewhere" down the road. It's probably 5 years out, but that's OK with me.

While this would definitely come within the lines of a "Weekend Accomplishment", I'm still thinking there's a "Gloat Post" violation here! OK, so there's no "set" rule or procedure in place (yet) regarding this, just out of decency, you really *should* get a seperate thread going on this particular gloat. Especially as to how so, SO MANY of us will now be totally GREEN with envy. We'd also want to know your reactions to the setup and hands-on use. Looks like one real sweet machine! Congrats, BIG time!!!

Well, I hurt my back Friday shovelling snow out the driveway at work. Boss to cheap to get a blower! But I'm healing well. Did some work on my coffee table project. Looks pretty good for an amateur!

Glen- your Hall Table looks great!
John- I should probably spend some time cleaning out my shop as well.
Dom - I am glad your lathe went together well.

Sounds like many had a good week. Well........back to work!!!!!

Morning all,

I was really running things Saturday morning, the vacuum cleaner, the washing machine, the dryer, etc. SWMBO let me take my apron off Saturday afternoon so I piddled in the shop with this and that until we had to leave to meet friends for dinner. Dropped by the toy store Sunday to pickup a piece of maple and a few DC fittings. Also the hardware store for some brass bolts. While at the hardware store met a new employee from Oregon that is a woodcarver. Spent the rest of Sunday PM installing DC fittings and continuing my piddling.

Hope all of you have a good week,
Bob

Well I've gotten all the subassemblies glued up for the assembly table/bench/outfeed table top glue up as well as the blanks for the legs and sled feet. Good ways to go yet though.

I went to a floor finishing seminar pretty much all day Saturday. For $30, I got two meals, a sweatshirt, a t-shirt, a hardwood floor maintenance kit (door prize), lots of literature, plus a 3-hr. class on sanding and finishing floors that gets me a credit towards certification.

Sunday morning was church where I finally got to meet the pastor's (also my bidness pardner) NINTH kid (sixth boy, oldest is 15). The afternoon brought the usual nap, then went to dinner at the neighbor's, where we talked for quite a while, of course including ww'ing, since that is his hobby as well.

If it would ever warm up here, I would get some shop time in, but it's just plain TOO COLD !!!
Time to get back to the grindstone...

Got four frames for glass doors for the hutch assembled. Planed, ripped, machined, glued up Saturday. Sanded on Sunday. Then watched the race. (If you have to ask which race, well....) Made some dentil moulding (after I made a jig for it), some cove and crown to trim out the top. Maybe I can get those attached some night this week.

Who is going to to the plans for the weekend? Dr Zack? What if we get Ernie Miller to come around and wish us a Rocking good weekend? Don't want to jump in his grave.

I spent Saturday morning watching my son, Kerry, run the 3200M and Saturday afternoon watching him run the 1600M. In between I assembled the boat shelves I'm building. All in all it was pretty productive.

Well, I didn't get any woodwork done, but I did finish detailing the motorcycle and that is significant cuz as soon as I get the bike sold, I can get the new table saw and other toys that I've been drooling over.

I won't be working on furnature for awile we took possesion on the fixerupper last monday. I have all but three of the windows replaced.most of the interior walls preped for paint. git the valley in the roof fixed. and a roof on the new 10X12 shed. had the electrical checked out and did some shopping for supplies. I miss sitting in the shop!

The wife gave me a full ten hours of shop time on Saturday. Since I've been (slowly) rebuilding the shop, 2 hours at a time, the shop time has been more construction than anything else. On Saturday, I got most of the electrical finished. I'm surface mounting my strip fixtures so that I can move them around if needed. I got 7 fixtures up, finished installing outlets and switches. Moved an old filing cabinet back to my wife's "side" of the basement ;-).

Now all I have to do is add 3 more outlets at the workbench, hang doors, trim, clean, and move tools around - then I'll be doing woodworking again!

Overall, feels pretty good to be making progress.

I got all three (four) of my objectives completed:

1) painted the flat shelves in the closet I put in last week,
2) installed laundry room "cabinet style" shelves I made last week,
3) installed and painted tall closet shelves I made last week,
4) put final coat of varnish on my walnut built-in in family room. Just that took 5 hours, 25 minutes. My brushing hand hurts after this weekend.

I'll post pictures of each separate item later - gotta go give a bid on a mantle...

Todd.

It just doesn't seem right with out you doing the weekend projects.

I made a bench top mitersaw support system for my 12" CMS it set on my 12" RAS bench. I don't use the RAS much but it does come in handy to cross cut wide material.

The CMS support system has platforms on each side with metal tubing that alows supports to be pulled out . the main table is 52" long & can be extended out to 83".

Built a small cabinet w/3 drawers to hold the new (gloat #1) Jet 6x48 + 9"disc sander off the floor. For those who felt a disturbance in the force, note in the pic that one can use 5 clamps in a glue-up. One more to follow...

For once I actually accomplished my objectives for the weekend. I completed the woodworking part of the saw till. All hand cut joinery including using a Stanley #71 router plane and a carcass saw to cut the dados. Hand cut dovetails, and all surfaces are handplaned with the edges shaped with a spokeshave. I will be painting it tonite with Lexington Green milk paint and then oiling it with Danish oil.

The three drawers will be done at a different date when I get the chance. Right now I'm sort of thinking of lacewood fronts for the poplar drawers with turned ebony knobs, but that is subject to change. I think I'll french fit at least one of the drawers to hold my saw sharpening files.

I'll try to upload some pictures tonite when I get home.

My plans for the weeekend were to finish a bookcase headboard project I started over the holidays. This should have been a weekend project. So far it has been a two month project. It seems that I just haven't had any time for the shop this year. The project is made out of Home Depot oak ply and native solid oak. the plywood feels like balsa, but the solid oak is as dense as any I've ever had. This project did let me use my biscuit jointer for the first time. Once I got it adjusted it was a piece of cake to slap the ply together.

Hello all. This is my first post to the Creek!
Knocked together some samples for a frame for a bathroom mirror for my sister-in-law (it has to match or complement her existing woodwork.) She made her choice and I hope to get some shop time by Friday to finish up. Also got a start on building a new router table.

The big thing was watching my daughter's basketball team win its semi-finals game on Saturday. The finals are Tuesday evening, so wish her luck!

and had a great w'end with Son and DIL .... on the way back from Atlanta we diverted off I75 and trekked over to Madison GA .. which is famous for its old antebellum homes. Madison was the only town that Sherman failed to burn on his march to Savannah. There are many beautiful old homes there complete with the big white columns and porches. Well worth the trip over there.

Oh Keith, man do I for SURE know where you're at! Week before last, my eldest girl came down with it on that Monday and went thru to Tuesday. Wed. a.m., my youngetst got nailed. She, of course, was back up and at it by Wed. evening! Yours truly started feeling icky on the way home from work that Wed. Like yourself, I can never remember *ever* being so sick in my life! Down the rest of Wed. on thru and including Sat. First food on Sunday! In between, the wife got bit on Friday! THAT was a miserable week. Get well soon!

What's sweep???? Seriously, I've only had time for a couple of test pieces on the Performax. Works great! :D The adjustments were a piece of cake, and assembly is pretty easy too.

When the new stuff is done and mounted, I've got 6 drawer fronts to sand. They had some tiger figure and the planer left it pretty chewed up.

If you look carefully in the background of the pic of the Performax, there is any empty mobile base. That'll be my next gloat when it's delivered, sometime this week.

My family also got socked with the flu. I actually took off work on Thursday & I never call in sick ( at least not for really being sick ;)

Got most of the taxes done on Saturday. Seeing how much $$ I spent rehabbing 2 rental properties last year pretty much bummed me out for the rest of the weekend. Besides it's still too cold to go out to the shop.

Spring's coming - I'm figuring 2 more weeks then I'll be back out to the shop having fun :D Then maybe another month or so & maybe I'll even get to play a round of golf :D

Ernie- Great to see ya & congrats on closing on the house. Hope the fix up goes well & you get to sell it for big bucks, which of course translates to more tools  ! I'll add my plea in for gettin back to the rockin good weekend project posts.

BTW - There were way too many stealth gloats in the weekend accomplishment thread- Y'all knock it off ;)

My shop time this weekend consisted of cleaning and waxing all my major tools (Table Saw, Band Saw, Jointer, Drill Press, Lathe) It seems I heat my shop with propane gas and the heater I use does a great job but it does cause condensation on real cold days and the moisture causes a little rust on the tools. I now cover each tool and keeping each waxed helps alot. I also. put up several sections of Peg Board to hang some hand tools, and I made a crosscut sled for my tablesaw. Nothing exciting but things that needed to be done.:D

...Attending Junior's first soccer game of the season. Ol' stepdad just doesn't get this game. I keep telling him to knowck that kid on his &^%*!, but then the coach reminds me this isn't the same kind of "football" I played.

Then it was off to the Atlanta WW show. Big fun! I told my buddy I was looking for an older guy with a mustache wearing a Stetson. I thought, "Ho hard could it be to find one guy wearing a cowboy hat?" Tougher than I thought. There musta been 50 of 'em!

So, Ken Salisbury, I'm sorry I missed you.

But the day wasn't a total loss, as I came home wioth a few goody bags from the show. Nothing big this year, but lots of fun little toys to play with. Unfortunately, when I got home and opened up the box with my new router table switch, I found that the safety key was missing. I could deal with it being stuck, but "missing" is a whole other thing. So....

Back to the show after church on Sunday. It's a tough job, but hey.... I'm glad I went, because I saw in intriguing demo of table saw safety ideas by Kelly Mahler. I had read the discussion in his book on kickback, but had never seen it demonstrated so clearly before. He discussed the physics of kickback, then demonstrated it, using a piece of rigid foam insulation instead of a piece of wood. ZING!!!!!

WOW!!! If you didn't see it, let me describe it to you, 'cause it's important. He started out by saying that we have all been taught that the safest place to stand when cutting wood on a table saw is to the left of the blade. I've seen this depicted in any number of books. But Mehler said that was the worst place to stand in case of kickback, since the physics of kickback would put the piece right there, to the left of the blade. He said that if you weren't using a splitter (or a riving knife on the Euro saws) the only safe place to be was on the far right side of the blade. He demonstrated by doing just that - standing against the right side of the saw (a benchtop saw), and feeding the foam board into the blade. No problem, until the foam got past the teeth at the back of the blade, and he let go. ZING!!! It flew right where he said it would - and right where I normally stand when using my table saw - to the left of the blade!

So, my next move is going to be making darn sure the splitter on my saw is working as well as it can, and if it can't work well enough, I'll make or buy one that can.

Which reminds me...does anyone know where I can buy a small piece of 3/32" plate steel?

After reading all of the weekend accomplishments, my self-pity kicks into high gear. It's been a long winter with the third stall packed tight with boxes.

It's starting to get warm enough that I am thinking about tackling the whole job of putting a floor in the trusses and moving everything I can up there. By the time I'm done with that I should be able to park the cars outside. Hopefully, I will then be able to contribute to the weekend project list with more than "watched Wisconsin kick Minnesota's butt in hoops.:) "

OK, it's not woodworking, but coming back from a 7 day ski trip with a 10 and 13 year old is a major accomplishment. Over 100 runs in 7 days, low temp of about -25F, high of +30F (heat wave!). Ski area was virtiually empty. The only thing missing was a foot or so of fresh snow. Eldest daughter can now ski some triple black diamonds and has a lot more energy to do so than dad does. Youngest daugher has discovered "glades" (skiing through the trees for the non-skiers here). I still think that's nuts, but I'm told I'm from the old school and that "flirting with trees is kool". Dad can still beat either of them in a race (of any type), but eldest has indicated that she wants to go to "race camp" so she can figure out how I do that. So I'm sure I'll suffer a defeat in a year or two. Mom enjoyed the trip as well from the comfort and safety of her showshoes and x-country skis.

So, all in all, a great family week, no broken bones, no bruises, only one "crash", and nothing two Advil with breafkfast couldn't handle.

Oh yea, skied through an area of white (paper) birch aproaching 2 1/2 feet in diameter and not more then 30' tall. I was amased how they adapted to huge amount wind and other negative conditions in the area.

Not much activity in my shop this weekend. Since I was at the local Odyssy of the Mind competition with my youngest daughter Saturday half the weekend was over before I knew it, the other half was mostly consumed working on SawMill Creek. Lots of email from everyone and some great suggestions for things to do in the future.

I did get the little music box built that I had on the schedule. I don't have the movement yet so it isn't quite complete. My poor old floppy drive has died so I can't get a picture from my camera to my computer. I'll post a picture of the box tomorrow after I get the floppy replaced. Yep, before anyone asks I do have a cable for the camera but I never use it, I have been using a flashpath card for years to transfer data from the smartcards that my camera uses to the computer.

I think Ernie keeps statistics on who actually gets their projects done. Hope I can keep up my end if he decides to continue tracking weekend accompllishments here at the Creek :)
