I've been lurking here for a few months, and posed a few questions with great responses. I have learned a lot just reading thru the many posts. I just love this place, although it is addictive. I was wondering if there is anyone in the Nashville, TN area that would be willing to help teach me how to sharpen/use hand planes? I have checked with Woodcraft in Franklin, TN but no classes on hand planes. I picked up a #8 Jointer from my father a few months ago, along with a #5. Just recently bought a #4 from e-bay(still waiting for it to arrive) and still looking for a good block plane. I'm ready to use them, but they need to be sharpened first. Thanks for your assistance.

Hey Travis,
I just learned how to sharpen. I use the "scarry sharp" method with sandpaper. I bought a lee valley jig - here

http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=51868&cat=1,43072,43078&ap=1

You will also need some glass and paper - method described here

And I used Brent Beach method to grind the edge flat.

For using the plane - buy The Handplane Book by Garrett Hack (sp?) it is a great resource.
Have fun!

Thanks Bob, that's kind of what I was looking into. Most of my research keeps bringing me back to that, so I guess that's where I should start. Thanks for the advice.
