This is a heavy walled bowl from Quaking Aspen. It's 12" diameter and the walls are 1.75" thick. I left them thick to try texturing for the first time. I textured the rim using a Ryobi power carver with a rounded off drill bit in it. The Aspen was probably too soft of a wood. I'm going to give it another try with some harder wood.

Curt, Ken's right... What a beauty!! I think you did a great job with your Ryobi!! Also, you've given me inspiration to try some texturing. I turned my first piece of Aspen (endgrain) while I was in Colorado last week at a Craft Show. I had a lot of trouble with end-grain tear out... taking too heavy of cut with such soft wood, I guess, but one piece of it was colored like yours. It sure is pretty wood. Now. I have a Ryobi power chisel... is that the same thing you are talking about? If so, you have given me a good idea! As long as it will chuck up in the Ryobi, you could use just about anything to texture with, couldn't you?
Now I wish it wasn't so late... I'd like to go to the shop and try something. :)
Thanks for posting this beauty, Curt. Thick is good, too. Well done.

I like the thick walls and texturing Curt. With it being aspen, it certainly won't be to heavy. Nice one.

Beautiful work as always, Curt. I admire your success with aspen and cottonwood. About half my attempts with aspen have ended in the woodstove.

Another Beauty, Curt. I'm not much for texturing, but you use of it here is a plus!

Curt.. I like the thick walls very much. The texturing seems to go well with the wood. Lots of different contrasts.. nice. Some woods seem to well suit to this sort of treatment.

DANG IT!!! Now I am really ticked!!!! I had 5 12-14" diameter logs set aside to bring back from the mountains. After the rain I did not feel like slogging back down the hill to haul the logs back up to bring home. I knew I should have, after seeing the beauty in Aspen from this piece!!! DURNIT!
