I'm building a double double box joint. I was using a spiral bit to make the end grain cut pieces (the corner posts) and it chattered so bad it blew the brand new bit to pieces. Do you guys use a spiral bit or do you use a straight fluted bit? I really don't want to have this happen again. I would hate to have it be my finger (again).

Straight, fluted. Spirals are too easy to flex. Got to give a spiral bit time to cut and stay straight.
I've also learned, recently, that chattering is sometimes caused by the speed of the router being too low.

Was it a 1/4" bit? I've never had good luck with 1/4" spiral bits - they've all busted. I use my straight flute or "canted" straight bit - it's basically a straight flute bit with the flutes tilted just a little, giving more of a sheer cut.

the bit was 3/8" solid carbide by freud. Brand new. 50 bucks. :o

Solid carbide never seemed like a good idea to me on a router bit. It's awful hard and comparatively brittle for something spinning that fast. I think I'd take it up with Freud.
