This is my first attempt at a natural edge bowl. This is from a large maple burl I picked up a couple of years ago while helping make maple syrup.

The bowl is 10 ½” diameter, 4 3/4 “ at the high point, 1 5/8” at the low point. Wall is approximately ¼” and gradually increases to about ¾” – 1” at the bottom to provide a little weight for stability. Sanded to 600 grit, 3 coats of Watco ‘Natural’ Danish Oil, hand rubbed.

As always, your comments/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for looking!

Great job steve! An awesome first NE. As for suggestions, personally I try to avoid the clean line of the "sawed edge" at the top of a NE bowl (I think it throws off the natural edge a bit) but that's personal preference. The execution here is great, the finish is solid, and I LOVE the form! Is it a round-bottom, or does it just appear that way? :)

Nice looking piece Steve. Looking at the finished result it must have been a little nerve racking to turn. Great job.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

Patrick - the clean line you speak of at the top of the bowl was not intentional - it was from the chainsaw. Had to rip the burl in half as it was to heavy for 2 of us to lift into truck!

The bottom was turned round and can really spin great! Left it thicker at bottom so that it returns to the full upright position when finished wobbling around!

Very nice looking piece Steve. Great form and the wood is beautiful. Not sure I agree with you on leaving the bottom tick for stability but I understand your rational.

Awesome bowl, Steven. I like to make round-bottomed pieces that automatically upright themselves when tipped. It's fun. Great job. I'm jealous of you, now. My 5th or 6th NE didn't look that good! :)
