I've been doing some research on a new planer. My benchtop Delta is just about ready to die, probably because it is too light weight and underpowered for what I've been using it for. I think I need to go to a stand alone cabinet style with cast iron and at least 3 HP. I've checked all the major brands, and searched through all the "Creek" archives. I've come to the conclusion that a shear action spiral cutting head (Shelix - style) is a fabulous feature. I've also concluded that Grizzly gives an incredible "bang for the buck."

In talking to the Griz folks, I've learned that they are just about to introduce a model G1021x2 (http://www.grizzly.com/products/g1021x2)

This new model is the same as the G1021X (http://www.grizzly.com/products/g1021x), but has a few cosmetic differences and has a new "Shelix style" shearing spiral cutting head as contrasted with non-shearing spiral head. The Grizzly customer service rep made it very clear that this new model mimics the Byrd Shelix design and is built by Grizzly. Did the Shelix patent run out? Are there other "Shelix style" cutterheads out there manufactured by someone other than Byrd?

My questions to fellow "Creekers" are:

1. Are there any G1021X users out there and are you satisfied?

2. Is anyone out there using a spiral cutterhead that is not satisfied with it? What is the downside of going to spiral (other than cost)?

2. Has anyone used a "Shelix style" cutterhead other than the Byrd brand?
