After blowing a tire (actually having the tire jump off the rim and get chewed up), I decided it was time to also take care of a noisey bearing by replacing the bearings on my '72 Delta 14". I ordered upper and lower axle bearings from Iturra Design only to find out that the wheel bearing on the drive axle had turned on the shaft to the point that now the shaft has to be replaced ($76 + shipping) and another week without a band saw. It better run super after the rework. there was no real indication of the damage to the axle, and I am glad that the housing was not damaged whick would have really been bad.

The bearing change itself has not been that bad and I would encourage those with the older units to give the bearings a check. The biggest problem there would be removing the drive belt to have the drive wheel spin freely by itself and listen (and feel) for any roughness. The top wheel can be checked with the blade removed during a blade change.
