install the new chuck for my drill press? Does it need to be cleaned up first? How?
Do I need to do anything with the spindle? I had a hard time for a while keeping the last chuck on the spindle :( , but eventually it held. At least until the chuck broke in half :D .
Any help would be appreciated.

It's a Morse taper, right? "Google" Morse taper, and you should get lots of answers.

The chuck fits by perfect metal to metal contact, and so if you get any grease or dirt in between the two pieces, then you will have a hard time maintaining that contact.

I use some alcohol on my mating surfaces to ensure that they are clean. Kerosene or paint thinner should do the trick.

If the metal surfaces are damaged, then you will need to get a new arbor.

I've seen some instructions say that you give the chuck a nice tap with a rubber mallet, while others instruct you to raise the table up to the chuck, with a piece of scrap wood under the chuck and press fit the chuck with the table pressure.

I use the rubber mallet approach myself.
