OK -take a color wmf clip art.

Ungroup it

Combine it

and it turns into a black and white graphic which most of the time works fine for engraving.

Can anyone explain what "Combine" is doing?

A grouped object is a set of individual, separate objects that are treated as a group. But they are still separate objects, so each can have it's own fill and outline color.

When you "combine" objects you are turning them into a single object. A single object can have a single fill and outline color.

For example, say you draw a rectangle and set it's fill to black. Then you draw a circle that 1/2 overlaps the rectangle and set it's fill to yellow. If you group them, they stay as they are now. Same colors, same objects. If you combine them you create a new shape that looks like the outline of what you had before. Curved at one part and rectangular at the other. It's no longer two objects. It's one object that follows the shape of the original two. It can have only one fill and outline color. So it no longer has a yellow and black filled area. It is one or the other.
