When I bought my house last year, there was a 10' tall stump in the front yard. I cut it down, but it was too big to move. After 'suggestions' from the neighbors, I've finally had a friend come and we sliced it into 1" and 2" slabs, about seven feet tall. It's Wiliwili wood, and is lovely. It was used anciently for surfboards, among other things.
I want to give it proper respect, and would appreciate some suggestions.
My first idea is to finish one of these as-is, untrimmed, and mount a wooden clockwork on the face.

But there's a lot of wood, and I'd like to a do a bench, etc.
What's your suggestion for finishing? I can get access to a big drum sander, but wonder if that would make it too 'perfect?'

I've used Tung oil on Koa wood, which is nice, but I'm leaning towards a good shellac to preserve the color and beauty. Your opinions?
