I was cruising through Lowes last night and came across a Hitachi contractors saw. The sign said 3HP motor. I looked around for the plug. Only a 110 plug. Is it possible to have a true 3 horse motor running off of only 110v?

I notice they state it as a 3hp induction motor at 15 amps. 15 amps says 1HP to me. Not an answer but another question. Do induction motors get rated differently? It looks like they are using the Volt*Amps*Efficiency/746 formula where Efficiency is 746*HP/watts.

It sounds like they're using the " Sears" method of rating h.p. That's where you take the real h.p. and multiply it by "x" where "x" is any number you like but greater than one. :) But seriously I don't believe these are truthful or meaningful ratings and only mislead the customer. That doesn't mean the saw is bad though, just their marketing.
