My friend is about to build an easel for his gf in my garage. So I will be doing anything that is in the least bit dangerous for him. I was wondering if anyone had any plans that he could use. I would design some but I have a feeling if I did that it would get expensive (and he is thrifty.) So in short I need some collapsible cheap easel plans.

How heavy does it have to be?
Do you want it to fold for storage or transportation?
What will be on it?

All of these question could make a difference on how its made.

Fold for transportation and storage most likely just needs to collapse flat....
Doesn't have to be extremely heavy wont be doing any paintings over three foot or so most likely being built out of some mahogany that I have left over.

I'm in Vermont right now (live in Oregon), so I can't take a picture, but I made a pretty nice simple folding easel for my wife out of 1x3 stock. It is a tripod design- Make the back (center) leg shorter than the front ones, then bevel one end of both the two front legs across the wide direction about 15 degrees. Use a bolt and a wing nut for the pivot, cotton rope to keep the legs from spreading too far, and bevel the bottom parts of the legs so they sit flat on the floor. Use the remaining stock to make a cross bar. Nice and easy.
