Have any of you built a Miter Saw Stand? Stationary or mobile.

I built one from Wood Mag's plan. It was one that had support extensions on the sides that folded down.

Unless you have your heart set on building something, I highly recomentd the Ridgid MSUV.
For the price you can. hardly buy materials.

I just throw a pice of ply over 2 cheap sawhorses I got from HF works for me and gives me a workbench so I dont have to set my tools down on a finished floor or countertop.

Miter Saw Stands
Norm has a nice long wall unit, that takes up a lot of space, but stays permenantly set up. The alternative, which is what I chose is the Rousseau 2875XL

When it is spread eagled it covers a 90 inch span, but when you easily fold the wings down it is only 36"

Notice it comes with a fully adjustable stop system. It has twin stops, one for short boards, and one for long. You can cut about an 80" board on this using the stop system, and get hairline accuracy due to the adjustable measuring line, and tape. I highly recommend a stop system no matter which way you go, because it is essential for getting perfectly repeatable cuts. Let's say you are making rails for a chest of drawers, do you want one to be off by a 16th and showing a gap on the front of your piece? You can force clamp it to close, but then you are tensioning the wood, which causes more problems. That is just one example that a stop system affords you. This Rousseau is beefy, it's a monster. You can read my review on it, or should I say my reviews on it at Amazon, they are the first 2 featured reviews. I am impressed with the shop made units. Maurice's unit that he shows you in the link is dynamite, especially because he has the dust collector built into it. That is the nicest dust collector I have ever seen. Most people throw together some plywood. DC is the problem with Miter Saws, because none of them have very good built in collection systems. How can you expect a saw that can angle, and tilt in a zillion different directions, to catch all of the sawdust flying out the back of the saw. Great job Maurice. DC is something I still have to work on with the Rousseau.

If you have the space, a long wall unit, that is stationary, like Norm has at the NYW is great.

If you would like portability with a stand, their are a lot of nice options out there also.

For a dead cheap, no frills stand, buy a Home Depot saw horse that folds out to a flat table. Seriously, I had my Makita LS1013 on one for awhile. That is a saw horse I would advise everyone to get because the top flips up, to a full size top, that comes with a plastic jaw vice set, to hold your work. I think they are about 29 dollars, and plenty strong. I think they are rated at 500 pounds, yet they are so lightweight, you can carry them anywhere. Get a second one, and add a box or anything on top that is the same height as your miter saw, and you have an instant stand. You can't beat the price and the utility.
