Small hollow form from some spalted Sweet Gum. It ended up 5" tall and 7" wide. Buffed antique oil for the finish.

Another beauty Mark. How is the sweet gum for turning? Folks with managed timber land down here consider it a nuisance wood, so I could probably get my hands on a bit.

Well as usual I have not taken pics of some stuff. I have collected them back from friends and family, but WORK has gotten in the way. I figured I was going to post about 7 pieces all ni one day and innundate you guys with my poor turning ability. You know make the suffing at one time instead of dragging it out over the past 2 months!

I promise I have atleast 5 pieces that I wil post on wednesday, just keep looking for them.

Mike,

Get you a good bit of this wood. It turns great, finishes great. Turn a piece or two with it freshly cut....let some of the rest of the logs sit around and "spalt" for a while....then you will really like what you see.

Mark C......Beautiful piece and I love the colors in that wood. Awesome form and finish their my friend.

Sweet Gum turns very nice when green and when dry. You can get a good, clean cut with a sharp gouge. It takes little effort to get it sanded from start to finish.

We have an abundant supply of Sweet Gum around here. They get planted a lot around homes/businesses because they are quick growers and pretty tough. But most folks end up hating them after the gumballs start terrorizing their bare feet...:D...and littering their yards. They end up getting cut down.

That's where this one came from - I caught the neighbors cutting it down out of their yard one day and I picked up several big, nice chunks of it. This hollow form is going to them as a "thanks" for the wood.

It does spalt in a hurry, so if you want it to stay the light color that it is "on the hoof" then you better turn it in a hurry.

Very nice form and wood, Mark.

I cut down 3 big sweetgums 6 or 7 years ago. Too bad I wasn't turning back then.
