Hey All,

Nice piece of walnut saved from a buddy's firewood pile. It's my second bowl with a lot of the same problems as the first (sanding and finish, mostly). There was a little crack in the rim that I filled with coffee grounds and CA. No foot on this one, and a little rim detail to add some visual complexity. 7" x 4.25", sanded to 220, BLO finished and buffed.

A BIG THANKS to Travis Stinson for helping me out with my photo setup.

Criticisms welcome!

Gorgeous wood! I might have liked to see a rounded top edge, but outside of that... WOW.

Stunning piece of wood and the rim treatment/embellishments compliment the piece while letting the wood be the show. Nicely done Alex!

Has your friend seen what he was going to burn yet? I'll bet the woodstack gets a more critical eye in the future.

Very nice work, Alex. Beautiful wood and you did it justice.

Since you asked for criticism, on the photos I'd suggest moving the camera in a bit closer to the subject or cropping a bit, so there's not quite as much background as these. Right now, the bowl is about 1/3 of each frame. I'd make it about 2/3 or a bit more of the frame, with the sides equally dividing up the remaining third. Check out some of the recent pics from Travis, Mark Cothren, Neal Addy, or Mike Fuson for examples of what I mean.

Framing it tighter like this would show off the details of your beautiful work and the great wood much better. I understand how nice it is to finally have a professional looking background, and a lot of people instinctively want to show it a bit. Ideally though, the background shouldn't be noticed. You turning should be the star of the show.

Thanks for the tip. I'll bring it in tighter for the next one and see what it looks like.

I officially have free reign over his wood pile. That bodes well since he heats his house with an exterior wood stove and his brother-in-law operates a crane for a wood products company! Every few weeks they run out to a site and load the "throw-aways" onto a 7k farm trailer...
