I plan to use this piece as an illustration in a sermon. I did this piece to tell a story starting from the bottom. We start out as the oak covered with walnut which represents sin. Then we make it to the cross made of bloodwood, and then we are the white maple covered in the bloodwood. Finally we get to the top which is purpleheart. Purple in the Bible represents royalty. Measures 8x8 Lacquer finish.

Mike, you obviously put a lot of thought (and work) into this. The shape is unconventional and takes a while to accept. I'm a real stickler regarding consistent wood grain orientation and as far as I can tell, you've achieved that (a few areas look suspicious). I'm curious about your construction technique regarding the vertical pieces positioned between the maple segments. It appears that you attached horizontal pieces to your segments before you glued the rings together. Most people would place the vertical pieces in between during the ring glue-up and then sandwich the ring between two thin horizontal layers. This creates an additional “brick-laid” element. There’s certainly nothing wrong with the way that you’ve done it; it’s just different. Nice piece.

All I have is a little red X:( Closed out, came back in and there it is. Nice work Mike. Shape is a little like piece I made a while back. The crosses are a nice touch.
