I got some African Blackwood burl recently, but can't find it anywhere any the internet except for a few knife scales on eBay - anybody know anything about its price and/or availability? It is AMAZING looking wood.

I saw your post on penturners.org and I stared in amazement at the photo. IMO you erred when you used such a prize on such a cheap pen kit. The stuff you got is exceedingly rare and valuable. I've gotten blackwood with some small burl clusters in it before but you've got a chunk of gold in your hand. If you were interested in selling it pen blanks I would suggest you ask no less than $20 per blank for 7/8" blanks.

AB is an amazing wood! It is also fairly hard to get in larger chunks, though I have several, from 4" x 10" square bowl blanks, to boards and slabs.
For making into pen blanks, consider investing in a slab/board from say Gilmer Wood company. They also sell pen blanks, but the yeild out of a board makes it extremely profitable.
Being an African wood, the cahardwoods link doesn't help much.
A good source for AB pen and bowl blanks is from James at http://www.exoticwood.biz/
reasonably priced and a great guy to do business with.
Here are a couple handles in AB:

It is great wood to work--but can be murder on tools.
Take care, Mike

I have to echo these comments. That is a rare piece of wood and a larger burl could easily cost hundreds of dollars. Use it on something special.

This thread is nearly SIX and a half years old years old, Damien, and Joel hasn't logged on in over six years... I think you need to look elsewhere for your wood ;)
