View Full Version : Unknown Burl Bark Edge Bowl

I got this wood from a logger friend, he told me what it is, (TWICE), I forgot...
No smell when turning, coarse dark brown bark, blazing lightning like curl. :confused: - Anyone?

Wood: :confused:
Finish: Olive Oil sanded to 600
Diameter: 9 5/8 inches
Height: 2 5/8 inches

It is beautiful George. Can't tell ya the wood but it is some pretty nice looking wood.

Stunning George, nicely done .... did you use xtra pure or reg oil on that:eek: ? Really looks great. BTW, nice bit of photography also. Maybe that guy up in the corner has an idea.:D

Beautiful wood, and beautiful job finding the bowl inside.

I'm curious about your choice of olive oil as a finish. :confused: Olive oil can go rancid when exposed to air and light and make your bowl smell funky. I'd think mineral oil would be a similar look, with no risk of things not smelling sweet later on.

Still, it's a gorgeous bowl.

I use mineral oil on lighter colored woods... It never dries. Olive oil dries, eventually, and (so far - knock wood) I haven't had any odor problems (with my turnings :eek: )
I like the soft look of sanded wood and the oil brings a little extra glow for a while. I am toying with the idea of trying BLO or something like that to sand with, just haven't run out of olive yet.
Paul, it is just regular old olive oil (I buy it in gallons). What guy? Which corner?? Nobody seems to know what it is.
