I got this wood from a logger friend, he told me what it is, (TWICE), I forgot...
No smell when turning, coarse dark brown bark, blazing lightning like curl. - Anyone?

Wood:
Finish: Olive Oil sanded to 600
Diameter: 9 5/8 inches
Height: 2 5/8 inches
All comments and critiques welcome

What a great piece. I love the foot. I can see that I need to try an endgrain bowl.

Beautiful wood, and beautiful job finding the bowl inside.

I'm curious about your choice of olive oil as a finish. Olive oil can go rancid when exposed to air and light and make your bowl smell funky. I'd think mineral oil would be a similar look, with no risk of things not smelling sweet later on.

Still, it's a gorgeous bowl.

Thank you everyone!
Don,
I use mineral oil on lighter colored woods... It never dries. Olive oil dries, eventually, and (so far - knock wood) I haven't had any odor problems (with my turnings  )
I like the soft look of sanded wood and the oil brings a little extra glow for a while. I am toying with the idea of trying BLO or something like that to sand with, just haven't run out of olive yet.
Paul, it is just regular old olive oil (I buy it in gallons). What guy? Which corner?? Nobody seems to know what it is.
