The blank that Travis used for his recent demo in Memphis was Hackberry. After the meeting Travis had to help judge some pieces for our club that are going into an upcoming exhibition so I had some time to kill. I saw a small log in my stash and to my suprise it was Hackberry. I decided to see what I had learned from Travis. This measures 3" dia. x 3-3/4" tall. The base is 3/4" and the opening is 1-1/8". The last pic shows the piece on the lathe and why you need a big lathe.

Im very curious about the turning qualities of hackberry. I was surprized by the color of the wood in your picture. I was lead to believe that it was very light colored.. and very very hard.No commercial use that Im aware of..but a small one for turning may be in order :)

Whats its like?

Thanks,
Tom

Very nice, Keith. At first glance of the thumbnails, I thought it was a segmented piece due to the vertical lines in the wood. That sure is a pretty piece of Hackberry.

Tom, the color in the pic is pretty accurate. This log was dry and probably 1-1/2 years old. It was hard but turned easily.

Keith, that's a beautiful piece. I love the form, and that wood is really talking to you.

I got a piece of hackberry from Ed Breen while I was in Muskogee in March, and I have it sitting here waiting for inspiration to do something with it. You have inspired me, and I think it's not going to be long.

Very well done!!

Beautiful piece. If that is what happens after a single Travis demo my club needs to get him out.

He taught you well! I don't think you had that much to learn.

Beautiful hollow form Keith! Great form and finish! Thank goodness you had a lathe big enough to handle the situation!! Nice work!

Nice hf. I like the figure in the wood. Good job!

Nancy,
from bowl to hf. Are you sure your pen turning is safe? Don't want them getting angry at ya for leaving them for someone else.

Tyler, I couldn't leave the pen-turning if I wanted to. I have too many orders pending to do that!! I'm counting down days until retirement (142!! whoopee!!) so I can do even more of this. As it is now, my turning is pretty much limited to weekends--darn it!!

Edit: Oops. answered this under David's log-in! But it's really me!! Gonna have to watch which computer I'm using!!
