I have a job tomorrow where I'm installing a business name on the flaps that hang over a canopy. How do I install it without hard backing? The long word is chocolates and is 40 inches long. It's a text where the letters all touch each other.

If it's plasticized, like vinyl banner material and stretched tight, you won't need a backing. Just clean well with alcohol so it's dry and not greasy at all.
Try to do it when it's warm, in the sun is best. Use the vertical masking tape hinge method, so you can do half at a time, and peel the transfer tape very slowly.

If it's a flap that hangs freely like a flag, you will really need to have someone else on another ladder hold a piece of scrap plywood behind it to squeegie against.

Thanks Joe. Why is it better in the sun?

When you are dealing with a slight texture and nothing hard behind it the heat helps it to stick. If you ever get to do one of those in the middle of winter you'll see what I mean. It will try to come back off with the transfer tape.
