Hello,
This may be a dumb question, but here goes. Does anyone know whether a particular brand of (say 18 volt) Lithium-Ion battery will fit and operate with a cordless tool of the same brand that was originally sold with a 18 volt NiCad battery? In other words, can I upgrade the battery type from NiCad to Lithium-Ion on a given cordless tool brand? I’m assuming that some brands won’t accept the switch because of the size or shape of the battery, but are there any brands that will? And if so, is there any downside in doing this?

Yes, your tools do not know which type of battery is running them. The big difference will be your charger. NiCad and NiMH can be charged on the same charger. Lithium requires a special charger which monitors both temperature and the voltage of each individual cell inside the battery. Milwaukee will be your only choice as far as I am aware for getting NiCad or Lithium for same tools/chargers.

Thanks,
