Spindle finishing

Anyone care to share tips on how to finish spindle items on the lathe. E.g., do you finish the parted-off ends later?

Otherwise I part them off and finish by hand or use a hand held sanding device such as a small disk in a drill. The final finish is always hand sanded of course and then burnished if is called for. Of course I am a rank amateur so take it with a grain of salt
