Small Box Elder Platter turned end grain. Measures 9-3/4" dia. x 1-1/4" tall. Finished with antique oil and Beall buffed. Thanks for looking and your comments/critiques are welcome.

What's that supposed to mean?

Beautiful platter, Keith. Nice job doing it end-grain.

9 1/2" is small??? Either way I like it. Looks like a desert scene with the spikes or reddish rock giong into the grey!!!

I really enjoy your work!

How did sign your work to make it white?

I use the Dremal engraving tool, about $20 at the borg. I completely finish and buff the piece before signing then hit it again with the wax buff. Seems to make it stand out a little.

Excellent job Keith! And end grain orientation--wow. Really neat piece. Nice form.

Box elder looks great just after it's turned.
It also looks great just after it's finished, and after it's photographed!

That's a beauty of a platter Keith, especially being turned endgrain. I've never done anything with that flat of a shape turned endgrain. It must have taken some patience and sharp tools in addition to all of your other skills.

I guess I gotta ask why such a small base if the platter is to be used?? If it's a wall hanging the small base is fine, but as a user it is likely to be real tippy. I need to get some of that wood.

Al, this is strictly a display piece, either on a stand or on the wall.

Thanks -- the more I turn, then more I understand that the design of "user" stuff needs to be different from the design of "pretty" stuff. I don't see this mentioned or discussed much here or elsewhere and I think it is important. The same goes for finishing. Keep the final use in mind.

Pretty piece of wood and you did it justice.
