View Full Version : Pics of my first bandsaw box

Hello all,
I know everyone here likes pictures, so I thought I'd throw some in the mix. I was asked to build a bandsaw box as a gift, so I dived in and gave it a try. It turned out to be a rewarding project and I intend to build more. I made this one from quarter sawn cherry and finished it with Minwax Tung Oil Finish (4 coats). Any comments or suggestions from other bandsaw box builders?

That is very fine, indeed, Ryan. :)

I've done a few now, but nothing as artistic as yours.

How did you do the drawer? From the pic, I can't quite tell if it is one piece or a glue up.

Grant,
I sawed through the "raindrop" section along the grain to hide the cut line. Then I took the "drop" piece and resawed the sides off and cut a bowl out of the middle. (Which is how I assume most are built?) It is difficult, as you know, to hide the glue up lines, but I enjoyed the challenge.

Ryan, that's a beautiful box. The design, wood selection and execution are great. Congratulations of your first piece.

How did you start the cut on the inside of the first peice, The only way I can think of is that you broke the blade and brazed it back together.

Ryan, I love that box, the shape and finish are great. One thing I do with mine is add a contrasting drawer pull. With cherry I use walnut or maple. They are fun to do but the sanding.... Do you have an osscillating sander? Great job! Alan

Michael,
If you look very closely (pic 1031a) at the point of the "raindrop", you will see the grain line does not line up perfectly. This is because I simply cut into the "raindrop" area, removed what would become the box, and glued the joint back together.

Alan,
I think contrasting wood handles would be beautiful. I decided not to put a handle on this box because the overall scale is so small. I would love to see pics of any of the boxes you have made. I wonder if there is a small "cult" of woodworkers out there that love making these little boxes?
I do not have a spindle sander....yet. If I make even a couple more of these I should probably invest in one.

Ryan, Here are a couple I did awhile ago using cherry and walnut. I've given most of mine away to my kids. I like to use flocking inside the drawers. I like the way it looks and it cuts down on the sanding. Oh, these are from Lois Ventura's (?) book on bandsaw boxes.

Well, aint I the biscuit. I've never heard of a bandsaw box before, but boy do I like 'em! These are just the kind of projects I would like to make.

I'm sure glad I found this forum. I used to look for projects and most of what I'd find was downright lame.

Now I just have to buy that bandsaw. My local Woodcraft just got a new Rikon 14" in stock last week. Hmmmm...

Alan,
Great pics & great boxes! The result with walnut is beautiful. I have lots of 8/4 walnut in my storage room - I guess I know what I'll be working on this weekend.......

Gentlemen, you actually made me giddy with the pics...I'm no where near you guys in terms of know-how and experience, but it is my sincerest hope that one day I'll create some pieces that I'll not only enjoy doing but allows me to find something within a piece of wood that makes others react the way I did with your pieces: By simply saying "Wow."

Great, great job - I love this site!

Thanks Ryan and be careful with all the dust, especially walnut. I wear a good mask (NIOSH approved N 95) and run my DC as much as practical when sanding. Have fun the w/e.

Tony,
I did in fact visit your site before building my "Raindrop" box. I took inspiration from your (I believe it was called) "Jacarnada" box.
Your site helped me push my limits of creativity, I thank you for that. I must also add that I believe your work is extraordinary.

Very nice work. I've never done one of those but I wonder if ya could do the same thing or something similar with a scroll saw so you don't have to cut and then glue up ??
Any thoughts?

Mike

There is no reason why a scroll saw cannot be used as a substitute for a bandsaw, with the obvious exception of depth of cut.

Thanks Tony. Once the new shop is finished I'll have to give it a try with both the scroll saw and the band saw. Have several big pieces of maple that keep calling to me to do something with them!

Very nicely done, lovely wood with a nice finish combined with a fine balancing act.

I might be part of that “small "cult" of woodworkers out there that love making these little boxes”. Not to take away from your original post but here’s some that I made if you’re looking for ideas.

Brian,
The piece with the "cracked top" may be the most original idea I've seen, and what execution....wow! I aspire to be able to do work like that some day. Thanks for sharing your pics.
