Hi,

I've hit a snag with my Jet JWP 12 planer. I was planing away when it suddenly stopped. I restarted it and it ran for 20 seconds or so, emitted a loud screaming noise and stopped again. I've removed the side panels and I can see that the motor is trying to turn the chain but can't. When I try to turn the cutters by hand, they are unmoveable.

Does anyone have any idea what might be jammed in the mechanism and how I can free it up ?

Thanks in advance

Sounds to me like this may be a bearing problem or even frozen bearings. are there any indications of excessive heat on the bearing races? you would look for bluing of the metal on the outside of the bearings. The screatching sound you heard may have been the bearings seizing.

thanks Paul, I'll take a look, hopefully one of my engineer friends can help me out.

I'm off round there later anyway to fix my thickness sander which packed up directly after my planer !

Grrrrr one of THOSE days !
