Stole the plans from Shop Notes. Looks good in Melamine, but I don't particularly care to lift another sheet of Melamine (It took 5) as long as I live.

I like it. You may find that after it is loaded with lumber it will be difficult to roll around with those small wheels. I found that the red 5" wheels work great.

Used the Home Depot 4 in wheels. They are suppose to handle 250 lbs each. The Lowes ones were smaller and only handled 150 lbs each.

But Jack...it's still empty! :D

Nice job. That looks like it will really help to keep things organized, especially the shorts...the tough one for all shops.

Too lazy to put away all my wood (today) I got a stack of 8 footers on the other side of that door. I got sheets in the garage, and I got a 30 in garbage can full of scraps (that I should probably throw away).

looks good I thought about building one but decided to build a shed next to the shop to store wood in
I'll do that in the spring

That looks real Slick!
My kind of engineering - designing a piece for a purpose.
Now my $0.02 worth - make "hand holes" in the side for shorts to help you handle the long boards that are stored flat.
Looks really great.

Jack,

Jerry has a point. That melamine is already quite heavy and you will add quite a bit more weigh in stock. The bigger the wheels, the easier it will be to move around.

I have a very heavy MDF workbench on 3" wheels and it is very difficult (not at all impossible, just a PITA) to get moving...lots of inertia to overcome.

Your 4" might be all right but even heavier dutty 5" will be significantly nicer.

Jack, I really what you have done and will prpbably build one myself for the new shop that I am constructing this year. But, I would use plywood and bigger wheels.

Is the unit 8 feet long?

When you say that you "stole the plans from Shop Notes" what are you refering too?

Yes the storage rack is exactly 8 feet long. The plans are from volume 10, Issue 55 of shopnotes, and yes if I was to do it all over again, I would use a lighter wood and bigger wheels without brakes.
