Talk about obsessive, makes you wonder where he finds all that stuff. I guess then that comapared to that none of us are collectors.

His shop is just a few miles from my house. I went over for the open house a few weeks ago (archival links below) and was very impressed. I met Patrick Leach and Chris Schwarz and even got to try out a couple of Chris's nicer planes, Found a couple of good users at the tailgate sale too.

I was also at the tool show last month and saw his amazing collection. Room after room of the most wonderful tools. He doesn't have just one of each rare tool, he may have 10 of them. In one room there was a wheelbarrow full of old plow planes. Any one of them would be the centerpiece of someone's collection, and he had a whole wheelbarrow full of them! John must also be very trusting of other collectors. He let dozens of total strangers wander unsupervised through his priceless collection and handle the tools with no security. It was a wonderful day and well worth the 2 hour drive to get there.
