I picked up this wood at the local Stihl dealer. They have wood behind the store for testing saws and they said I could take a couple pieces. The one guy who works there has a stump grinding business and said he would save me some pieces. The owner says he would like to learn how to turn and asked if I would help. Duh!

This piece is 13" by 1.5"
It is sealed with Deft and then antique oil and Beall buffed.

Dunno 'bout you, but I think 'Dunno' wood makes the best turnings. This one goes into the 'Proof' folder. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b156/jt6089/9.gif

Nice platter indeed. I have turned several pieces of this ,there are several species of Maple; hard, soft, sugar, silver ,big leaf. I believe your piece is the silver, at least thats what the old timers call it around here.

I turned a bowl that the wood looks like that. Got it from a logger out west, he said it was big leaf maple. Beautiful wood :)
