Wow, that’s a long list.

Of course the length of the list says nothing about the validity of the conclusions. As many have pointed out, the media generally supports global warming, so a very long list supporting global warming would be easy to generate. But that would prove nothing.

I guess the question is, how do you determine who is telling the truth? To help me understand the list, I went ahead and reviewed the sources. I grouped things based on a quick look so I could be wrong about some of them.

Many of the links were to “think tanks.” All of the “think tanks” (the Cato Institute, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the National Center for Policy Analysis, the George Marshall Institute, the International Council for Capital Formation, and the Science & Environmental Policy Project) which tried to counter the evidence against global warming are funded at least in part by the petroleum industry according to SourceWatch.org. There is no question who funds the American Petroleum Institute. That doesn’t mean the conclusions they reach are invalid, but it does raise a flag for me.

I’m not sure how to categorize the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, but it looks like a one man crackpot to me. I could be wrong, but consult a doctor before following their advice regarding life extension or cancer.

Most of the links were to the popular media. There were some press releases, and quite a few blog postings. There were course notes from a class at the University of Southern California and there was a link to a book by a Danish political scientist.

Some, I didn’t know how to group. They didn’t seem to be “real” news sources, but they weren’t quite blogs or advocacy groups either. Those were: Spero News, NewsMax.com, The Hawaii Reporter, Sovereignty International, SpaceNews.com and Skepticism.Net.

Your reference to the 1975 Newsweek article on global cooling is a good one. It true that global cooling was a hypothesis at the time, but it was not widely supported and further research disproved that theory. It reminds us that scientists are not always right and that poorly thought out ideas can be promoted by the media and that we should be careful before we make decisions.

There were three links which I thought could be very important because they were to highly respected peer reviewed science journals. One of the items is from Science. The link was to a one paragraph story stating that a group supported by the energy industry felt that changes had been made to a report because of political motivations. It continues with a rebuttal of that statement by the authors of the report. It was not a link to an article challenging the science of global warming. That story was from 1996.

The other link from Science is dated from 1997 and deals with epidemiology; it does not take any stance on global warming. The link to Nature refers to an interesting new theory about a 70 year cycle of climate changes on Jupiter – it has no relation to Earth’s warming.

So, how do I decide who to believe? As I said earlier, I try to ignore the propaganda. I try to understand the science as much as I can. I watch for signs of bias. I look for authoritative voices. I look for voices that are speaking against their self interest. I look to see who is funding the research. I watch out for distractions from the real issues.

These organizations support the theory of human caused global warming. I find this list to be pretty convincing.

You have been working (reading) too hard. It's summertime and the living is easy. Rest assured this good old planet has been here millions of years before we got here...and it will be here millions of years after we depart it.
Take care,
