Can anyone give me some advice for a vacuum chuck for a Jet 1442? I saw one at Packard's called "Holdfast" for $249. Would this one work on my lathe or is there something that might be better. I do have a compressor, but am not real adept at building equipment. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you may need the whole vacuum setup not just the chuck. Is that correct?

Yes, I would be looking at getting a complete setup, but really didn't know what all I would need, and what would work on my lathe.

It sounds like you are looking at the Hold Fast vacuum system that uses a compressor instead of a vacuum pump.

I have a Nova 3K and have gone with an E-Z Vacuum Adaptor from Packards part number 111210. Surplus vacuum pumps can be had for less than $100. My vacuum drum (chuck) is MDF with 4" pvc epoxyed on. I doubt if I have $200 total in the set up including piping.

Take a look at this link: scroll down to vacuum chuck construction.
