I finally broke ground on my new shop. Thats me, the sweaty one on the right. I was limited to the help I could provide because of my back but wanted to do some to be a part of it. Hopfully the block will be layed today if the weather holds up.

Congradulations Sean. I'm just wrapping mine up.:) How big is it going to be? Mine's 12x20 and it's already too small. I see you're doing a concrete floor. I wish I could have done that. City will only let you do a slab up to 200 sq ft here though. Keep us in pictures. IMHO run all your electrical outlets just above bench heigth. No bending when plugging in tools. It sure is exciting, isn't it?

Very exciting ! The size is 20x20. I'll have outlets everywhere. Probably more than I would ever need but you never know.

It looks like the cement truck is already there waiting and the forms haven't been set up nor the steel laid. Did you have to work fast?

That cement was just for the footer section the block will be layed on.

What the heck are ya building a new shop for for, Sean?

That two-story gambrel chicken coop in the background looks as thought it could be converted easily enough with far fewer CMUs.

Tired of moving the car out of the garage every time I want to turn ! LOL

That's why my car hasn't been in the garage since last fall. Though the hard work on my garage addition is done so maybe I'll be in that and turning again in a month or so.:) Can't wait, I haven't turned on the lathe since I started the project - about 10 weeks.

Congratulations on the soon to be new shop.

Please, y'all, it's concrete, not see-ment. Portland cement is one component of concrete, along with sand, aggregate, and sometimes other materials.

That said, Sean, 20 x 20 is going to be a good sized shop (but not "more than you will ever need"). Congratulations. Many will envy you.

Good suggestion from Bill. I put the top edge of electrical boxes 48-5/8" + 1/16" down from ceiling joists. That's 5/8" for the ceiling dry wall, 48" for upper row of dry wall with no cuts, and a bit of wiggle room.

Pat, hang in there and keep the faith. Just got turning again after about 9 months of getting replacement lathe, moving, building new shop building, getting tools moved into new shop, etc. Still mostly working on the property and my sweetie's priorities, but manage to sneak in a little turning as needed.

That's really nice news, Sean! Building from the ground up is a great advantage when you get down to making things the way you want them!
