Well finally got to do a little turning this weekend after being on the road the last two weeks and on vacation the two weeks prior. The neighbor gave me a cedar log which has been lying around for 3 yrs. I cut in down and decided to try a end grain vase. It sure did turn out purdy. It is 3 1/4" across and 7 1/2" tall. Finished with Minwax Tung Oil and 4 coats of poly. I made a decorative pedestal. The LOML snatched it up almost before it was dry.

Cedar sure is pretty. I like how it's raised like that. Nice pedestal :)

Very nice Bernie; I have lots of the Cedar and it smells good and turns easy. I really like the for of the Vase, I can see why it was snatched up so quickly.

Cory it is easy to turn and when green can crack a lot. I have had pretty good luck with the DNA process. The main thing is it sure makes the shop smell good.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The pictures sure don't do it justice. The color is a darkish purple and not the usual red. Maybe because it is dry.

Purdy doesn't fully describe it. I love the pattern of color in that wood. Great Job.:)

I have four 18" diameter x 30" logs I will have to turn into now. They have been sitting for about 6 months now. maybe they will not be too sappy!

Great piece. I know LOML would also snatch something like that up too.

Bernie, nice work on the vase, our LOOL's tend to do that. Don't know about you but sometimes makes me feel like a little kid " see what the man child made " oooing and aaaaing over just about everything I make including the scaps ..... and I'm not too crazy about that feeling...
Anyway the cedar looks great and the pedestal is spot on.

Thanks everyone. Paul I don't think the finish was dry when she snatched this one. Dennis after a month on the road it is good to be home. I have doing this for 4 yrs. and it is getting old. I think it is time to pull a Barry Stratton (retire) and turn some wood.
