I have never been able to find any official size info for a gavel, so I just winged it. Mine was: Head 4 X 2 3/8 dia Handle 9.5 X 3/4. Striker was 4" Dia, with a 3" maple disk insert. You can see it at http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=54069. They're kind of fun to turn. Good Luck.

I found that the generally accepted size for a judges gavel is 10-11" in length including the handle and head. Here's a link to one that I made not too long ago...the head is 2.5" dia. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=56694
I also found this very informative tutorial and used it to make my gavel.

I couldn't find much about a standard size for the strike plate but, like Brian said, about 4" dia looked right.
Good luck and post pictures!
Jason
