Hi,
Can someone point me to the post where different automotive finishing supplies where discussed in use with the S.S./granite method? I'm trying to get the product names and grits.
thanks,
Joe

I don't know if thses are what you're looking for

The D&S Scary Sharp(TM) System (http://www.shavings.net/SCARY.HTM)
Scary Sharp(tm) System (http://home.earthlink.net/~kvaughn65j/scary.html)

I can tell you what I use. I have bought 3M silicon carbide wet/dry paper from Wal-Mart in the automotive section. I use grits 400,600,800,1000,1500,2000 & 2500 and 3' x 6" piece of 1/2" thick float glass. I found this place on the web

Online Industrial Supply (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/industrialsupply/abrasive-sheets-silicon-carbide-waterproof-9--by-11--paper-sheets.html)

I haven't bought anything from them yet but their prices are cheap. For around $70 I can buy a couple years supply of sandpaper.

I found 220 up to 2000 grit at the local auto parts store. I didn't see they had 2500, but at 2000 things are plenty sharp for me.

That said, if they had HAD 2500 I would have bought it too.

You might try this --

I have found them to be quite resonable.

Not sure if your question was answered or not, but it brought this to mind.

I don't have the post, but as I recall it regarded the use of a 3M polishing compound to polish the backs of plane and chisel blades. What I remember was using a hard maple block and the 3M polish to "strop" to a mirror finish.

3M makes a lot of very fine abrasive polishes that should work with this method.

Joel at www.toolsforworkingwood.com has the 3M PSA paper that is measured in microns. You might want to give him at try. (No, I don't work for them, I just sent them lots of my money...)
