Here was my original post with the pics of the first lumber rack. http://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.p...10079#poststop (http://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?p=610079#poststop)
Not only I made this one that I feel better about. I think I over done it a bit since I use 5/8" x 5 1/2" lag screws 3 of them per post. The holes were 2 1/2" deep at 5 or 6 deg to support the 18" pipes and the bottom tier has a shelf for shorter cut offs.
Since I was at it, I switched the fridge from the left corner to the right of the rack and build shelves on that corner to add more storage and work area. I gain a lot of space doing that. Then I moved a work bench (kind of) underneath to tight the whole thing together.
This garage it's a work in progress but is getting there. Now I need to get some ideas for the clamps.
Thanks again for all your feedback.
Regards,
Alex

Alex, the new rack looks a lot better than to forst one. Nice work.

I guess, being another "Creaker" from Southern California, my only concern is the next earthquake. All that wood will come right down pretty fast in the next big shaker. I haven't made a rack for my wood yet (don't have very much at this point), but I'm thinking of attaching straps that will attach to the studs above and below the rack that will strap the wood in when I'm not moving wood on or off the rack. The starps may not prevent the whole thing from coming down. That will be dependent of the severity of the quake and the direction of movement. I think it would at least slow down the collapse of the rack enough for someone to get out of the way. It would also prevent individual boards from flying off the rack and becoming projectiles accross the garage.
