I'm just getting started into clocks, and I'm wondering about using sitka spruce for the back to enhance the acoustics. I've also thought about veneering the spruce with hardwood to match the rest of the case. Any experience or comments about these two ideas?

I have built a few guitars so I am familier with working with spruce. I personally do not think it will enhance acoustics. The chimes are bright by nature. I would choose a wood that might mellow teh sound (liek mahogany or walnut). With that said I do not think the wood choice will really matter at all. Wood on a clock will be to thick to really resonate, Thre real resonace will be in teh clock works themselves.
