This vase is stave construction, as described in Malcolm Tibbetts, The Art of Segmented Woodturning. Each of the four staves is a laminate of walnut on the inside and canary wood on the outside. Finish is Watco Wipe-On Poly for less darkening of the woods.

This is my fifth turning project. So I would appreciate and comments or suggestions.

It is very hard to get those kinds of pieces to line up just right, but you seem to have nailed this one. Great job!

Man, that is one sweet piece of work. I marvel at the creative minds that produce works such as yours, after all, that 99% perspiration is just that without that 1% inspiration. In your case, John, the inspiration was just perfect.

Many thanks for the compliments, folks! But I can't claim total originality for the form. It is inspired by an art glass vase by Louis Comfort Tiffany made about 100 years ago. It is pictured on p. 127 in Louis Comfort Tiffany: artist for the ages, by Marilynn A. Johnson. "Inspired" means that his looks better! I get a lot of inspiration from both art glass and art pottery; they really know form.

John, great job keeping everything centered with nice tight joinery. To be very picky, I think the shape could have been slightly improved by tucking the foot in more "out of sight" and by not reversing the direction of curve as the profile reaches the top (a continuous curve to the top would have been better). For a "novice", this is exceptional work - congratulations.
