I'm sure this has been asked and answered here before but I sure cant find it. Does anyone know WHY mounting an Emmert type vise doesn't seem to be possible with the face of the rear jaw totally flush with the front bench edge ??? I've found numerous references to original Emmert plans mounting with the face 1/8" proud and this site has that down to 1/16" proud.

Is there something in the way these work that makes it just not possible to mount one flush? And if so, why then couldn't one just trim a bench end by the width of that minimum overhang for whatever length was necessary to accomodate the vise and rotation clearances ?? - leaving the rest of the bench length flush with the jaw face ??
Just trying to understand what's going on with this mounting issue before buying a PM vise, buying or making a benchtop to mount on Noden legs.

Same question has been asked before. The 1/16" clearance is needed to allow the vice to rotate or it would bind. The post you are referencing shows that very clearly.

Not sure why I didnt see this recent thread when searching yesterday morning. Started wondering later yesterday if someone might have posted the same question on the Tucker vise so searched that and found the thread.

So I think it makes sense to take my additional questions over to that thread. Should have stuck it in the Neander section anyway.
Thanks
