My main laser use is with Autocad, and I've been using Illustrator to do my engraving work that's not related to my main business as I happen to have it because it came with my photoshop package. I have a customer that wants to send me an SVG file created with Inkscape. I'm considering buying Corel, as it seems to be what everyone else is using, and I don't really know Illustrator at all, so there's no loss in skill if I change now.

Can Corel X3 read SVG files? If so what will I get in corel, the actual image elements, or just a picture like bringing in a JPEG?

Lastly, has anyone tried engraving directly from Inkstape? Can you separate the engraving objects from the vector objects?

Sorry for all the questions. Once I have Corel I'm sure I'll be able to answer more of these myself.

Yes, Corel X3 imports SVG, just like Illustrator does.

SVG, a file format created by Adobe, stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. It is a vector image, not a bitmap image like JPEG.
