Our preacher has a tree trimming business that he runs on Mondays. He told me that he had a tree about 10' tall at the first crotch. He then said that he had trouble reaching around the tree with his arms. He asked me if I wanted it and I asked him what kind of tree it was. He said that it was a mesquite tree. I accused him of gross exageration. I was right. It was only about 9' tall! :D

The gold bar is my fish measuring stick that is 22.5" long. The crotch piece was the first split in the tree. Everything else had gone for firewood, but I got all of the main trunk. Each piece is approaching 100-125 pounds each right now. So do you buy wood for the lathe or a lathe for the wood? The 12" Jet is looking a little puny.

Robert, that is a great wood gloat. To paraphrase a line from "Jaws", you're going to need a bigger lathe.

Those preachers are always exagerating! You must learn to forgive though.

Great score on the wood Robert......

But....now it's time to Super-Size your lathe. Just install a little Mustard in your shop and you'll be all set. :D

Hi Robert: I enjoyed our time together last Saturday with Ken Fitzgerald, though after seeing you in person I think an updated personal photo is in order!

The mesquite is spectacular you will have some fun turning it...on your next bigger lathe!

Best regards, Tom

Robert, outstanding! I don't know where in Texas you are, but for around our parts (West Tx) that is a big Mesquite, also nice and solid, doesn't look like the grubs have gotten into it. Very nice! Enjoy turning that! Mesquite is some of my favorite wood to turn.
