Shop made tool rest?

I got a slow speed grinder for Christmas and I'd like to add some decent tool rests for grinding chisels. I'm too cheap to buy a pair of Veritas tool rests and I would like to make some shop-made ones.

I'm looking for ideas/pictures etc of how to build same.

For years, my only grinder was equipped with a hardwood stick bolted (across the width of the machine) to the two cheap, bendy tool rests that came with the grinder. The structure is surprisingly rigid. Make sure the stick is planed straight and smooth.
