I'll be accompanying LOML to Grapevine, TX on Monday as she's attending the annual Barbie Doll convention. I'm not interested in barbie dolls, honest. Really, I'm not. I'm a tool guy, not a dollie guy, I can prove it. Honest. Anyway, I've been googling for things of interest to me around Grapevine and came up empty. My interests are (1) Woodworking and (2) Photography. Does anyone have any recommendations. Wednesday I'm flying down to Jointech in San Antonio for a one day one-on-one class, but other than that I think I'll be bored. Any Creeker visits or great tool stores available within an hour driving time from Grapevine? Oh yeah, did I mention I'm not interested in barbie dolls, honest.

Why not consider driving down to San Antonio and stopping by MiniMax in Austin on the way...err...maybe that would be dangerous?? LOL

Curly Woods in McKinney would be an excellent visit. There are also a number of 'Creekers in the area...try to hook up with them for a group meal or something and maybe make some shop visits. It's always a treat to see Steve Jenkins (now also in McKinney) as his work is outstanding and something to learn from. Kelly Hanna is east of Dallas and also fun to visit with.

you might as well stop by Central Hardwoods and pick up some lumber. If it wasn't for Lowes, the area would be a woodworking wasteland.

Well Richard, that doesn't sound too encouraging. As for picking up some lumber at Central Hardwoods, I don't think the airlines would appreciate me doing a carry-on with a couple hundred bf of lumber back to upstate NY. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I don't live in the DFW area anymore (haven't for 10+ years). I do recall that lake grapevine might offer some interesting photo opportunities - between the lake and everything else, there might be some good shots. Don't know what sort of photos you like t otake, so just making a suggestion. There is amountain bike trail, so if you like to photo nature / sports, perhaps that. right over by there is a huge Cabellas / Bass Pro shop. I've never really bought anything from these places, but they are fun to go through - the cabellas south of Austin has a bunch of stuffed animals and such which could be interesting to photo. (by stuffed, I mean taxidermy). The Ft. Worth zoo is nice, btw.

There is also a Rockler's down in arlington which is not too far south of grapevine.

Bob, you've received enough suggestions to fill a couple of days.

Here's another, Dowd's Tools in Garland (http://www.dowdstools.com/) about 20 east of Grapevine off 635. Call to make sure Tracy or Lynn will be home.

The Nasher Sculpture Garden (http://www.nashersculpturecenter.org/index.cfm?FuseAction=Page&PageID=1000001) bring you camera. Downtown Dallas.

Enjoy, Dallas is a wonderful city.

Best regards, Tom, now in Houston, but a Dallas resident for 30 years.

Bill, you just stole every idea I had. All great places. Arlington camera is a nice store as is Competitive but the owners are a bit abrupt. Elliott's is hardware nirvana, if they don't have it, it ain't made and all those retired guys working there actually know what they're talking about. Central Hardwoods is where I go to get almost all my lumber. Great prices and a huge selection. They will even mill it for you but what's the fun in that?

Sorry to hear that about Curly Woods. Mike Mastin had a fine business and was always a fine person to do business with.

Either way have fun...:)

How about a 1.5 hour drive to go to Waco Texas to visit the Homestead Heritage Woodworking School and barn. A very inspiring place and great classes.
